PIAZZA NAVONA

Piazza Navona Piazza Navona is one of most famous public squares of Rome. Its shape is one of an ancient stage, and was constructed in monumental style for wanting of Pope Innocenzo X, of the Pamphili family.
Piazza Navona begins in ancient times in Rome at the stage of Domiziano, it was constructed from Domiziano the emperor in the 85 d.C and in III the century it was restored from Strict Alexander. It was long 275 meters, wide 106 and could accommodate 30,000 spectators.
The stage was decorated with statues, one is the one of Pasquino (perhaps a copy of a hellenistic group pergameno that Menelao representative presumes itself that support the body of Patroclo), now in a square behind Piazza Navona.
Since it was a stage and not a circus, there weren't the carceres (cancels from which the horses came out) neither the thorn ( the wall which horses run around) like the Maximum Circus ran for example, but it was all free and it was used for the contests of the athletes. The obelisco that now is in the center of the public square before it wasn't , but it was taken from the Massenzio circus, that was on the Appia way.
The name of the public square was originally "in athletic contest", with reference to the naval wars (agones) which were kept for the public square and it was purposely filled with water: it was for a matter of simulations of battles effectively fought that they recalled great public, and the memory survives also in the name of the roads like "Corsia Agonale". Between 1810 and 1839 the public square has kept the race of the fantino, which is the race of horses mounts (but they did not have relationship with the most famous race of the barbs of via del Corso).
