CASTEL SANT'ANGELO

Basilica San Paolo The Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls is one of the four patriarchal basilicas of Rome, the second largest after the St. Peter in the Vatican.
It rises along the Via Ostiense, near the left bank of the Tiber, about 02 km outside the Aurelian walls (here its name) exiting from Porta San Paolo. The tradition wants that that the Apostle Paul was buried here (about 3 km from the site-called "Tre Fontane" - where was martyred and was beheaded); The tomb of the saint is located underneath the altar majeure, said papal altar. This is why, over the centuries, it has been a pilgrimage destination; Since 1300, date of the first Holy Year, it is part of Jubilee for the indulgence and the ritual is celebrated at the opening of the Holy Door.
The entire complex of buildings does not belong to the Italian Republic but is extraterritorial property of the Holy See. The area where there is the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, at 2nd mile of the Via Ostiense, was occupied by a vast cemetery sub divos (above ground), in constant use from the first century BC D.C. III. But sporadically reused, especially in mausoleums until ancient times. A cemetery was expanded and included different types of tombs, columbaria a small family funeral chapel often painted and decorated with stucco. Almost all of this tomb is still buried (for the most part below the level of the nearby Tiber), and is estimated to spread throughout the area under the basilica and the surrounding area. A small but significant part of it is visible along the Via Ostiense, just outside the north transept of the basilica.
